Boston Progressive Talk Radio is gone!

Yesterday I was driving around and one of the kids wanted to listen to Air America (WKOX) from
Boston -- It is now a Spanish language station. The site "Boston's Progressive Talk" is now redirects to Rumba 1200AM. What happened?

Where O where can I get my daily Young Turks, Stephanie Miller and Ed Shultz in the Greater Boston/NH area? Damn this sucks.

How to have Firefox 2 add feeds to aKregator

Create a file named, say, /usr/local/bin/feed-akregator that contains this:

#!/bin/bash
/usr/bin/akregator -a $1 -g "New, Unsorted Feeds"

And use that as the default application to add feeds in Firefox.

Access a remote DAAP share by tunneling over SSH (Ubuntu/Edgy)

The mt-daapd wiki has a nice write up on how to access a remote DAAP (aka iTunes protocol) share by tunneling over SSH.

But the instructions are quite right for an Ubuntu/Edgy desktop. The short, short steps are:

$ ssh homeserver -N -f -L 192.168.118.33:6689:localhost:3689

Instead of using the default 3689 port, pick a high number. First of all it means you won't have to start the ssh tunnel as root and it won't confuse banshee which wants to use that port itself. Also you need to specify your local ip address (eg: 192.168.118.33)

$ avahi-publish-address -v -H UbuntuLaptop.local -s "my personal homeserver tunes" _daap._tcp. 6689 &

Avahi is not Apple based code, so there is no mDNSProxyResponderPosix command. The above line is the equivalent to "mDNSProxyResponderPosix 127.0.0.1 squeal "shareName" _daap._tcp. 3689 &"

$ banshee

To debug this, keep an eye on /var/log/mt-daapd.log on the system running mt-daapd.

It appears that Rhythmbox gets a little confused about trying to connect to localhost:6689. Now only banshee dies when closing.

NH -- DIRTY GOP TRICKS ALERT! URGENT: MISLEADING PHONE CALLS BEING REPORTED!

This was mentioned on this evening NHPR on the drive home tonight. There is the email from the NH Democratic Party:

We have received word that households are receiving numerous, misleading automated phone calls that sound as if they are coming from Paul Hodes when they in fact are NOT. These calls potentially violate New Hampshire election law and need to be stopped immediately.

We have seen it before from Republican operatives in New Hampshire. This is an example of a last minute desperate attempt by forces who are scrambling in the face of potential defeat on Tuesday.

If you receive any suspicious phone calls, please listen carefully and save the recording on your answering machines. Call Kathleen Strand at the New Hampshire Democratic Party at (603) 625-0010 or email office@nhdp.org.

Most exciting upgrade to Ubuntu/Edgy

This morning I had a free hour and this is how I upgraded my hp compaq nc6000 laptop from Ubuntu/Dapper to Ubuntu/Edgy. After updating /etc/apt/sources.list to point to the edgy repos...

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get -dy dist-upgrade && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Well there was a conflict between x11-common and xinit which both wanted to provide the man page XSession.5.gz.

11:45am Wendy calls me and says the school just called and Griffin is in a ambulance on the way to the hospital and to meet her there. He accidentally ate something that contained pineapple -- to which he has a severe allergic reactions to.

11:49 I'm on the road approaching the hospital and get a call on my cell phone. The woman says she is the school nurse and starts saying my son is having an allergic reaction. I interrupt her and say 'Yes, I just talked to my wife and I'll meet the ambulance at the hospital'. She says 'Well, your son is sitting here with me in my office.' Then we realize she is the school nurse from a different chool and is talking about Trevor who is having an allergic reaction! Trevor had his bee/wasp allergy shot earlier this morning and is reacting to that. Since he too was having difficulty breathing, he too is sent via ambulance to the ER.

12:05 -- Wendy and I both arrive at the ER before either of the kids do. Explain to the ER admitting person that yes both boys are ours, they are coming from different schools, with the same problem (allergic reaction, breathing difficulty), but different reasons (food allergy vs reaction to allergy desensitizing injection).

Long story short, after evaluation, some benedril and alburterol breathing treatments, we were sent home.

Around 3pm I worked through a few iterations of apt-get update, apt-get dist-upgrade, apt-get -f install, aptitude dist-upgrade, I have a fully upgraded from Ubuntu/Dapper to Ubuntu/Edgy.

There are a bunch of new, interesting packages to take a look out. The list is here: EdgyConfiguration

Now that was a stressful upgrade.

Converting Creative MuVo WAV to a 'real' WAV

I recently recorded an event using my little Creative MuVo TX FM mp3 player. It created a 22M WAV file of reasonable quality, but lame and audacity had problems converting it to an MP3 file.

The work around is to open the original wav file with audacity and then File->Export as WAV. The resulting wav file is about four times as large, but is in a usable format. From there use your favorite tools to create an OGG or MP3 file.

It appears the problem has to do with the way the MuVo encodes the wav:

VOC001-original.wav: RIFF (little-endian) data, WAVE audio, IMA ADPCM, mono 8000 Hz
VOC001-clean.wav: RIFF (little-endian) data, WAVE audio, Microsoft PCM, 16 bit, mono 8000 Hz

The good folks at GetDemocracyNow.com provide debian packages for Ubuntu/Dapper, but didn't get the dependencies quite right. After intalling the two democracyplayer packages from their Ubuntu download page, I needed to also install the following packages:

$ sudo apt-get install libboost-python1.33.1 libgtk-mozembed-ruby mozilla-psm

Moving photos around behind f-spot's back

I've been using f-spot since it showed up in Ubuntu/Breezy and have been keeping all my photos in a directory structure like this:

/PHOTOS/Photos/2006.06.30/
/PHOTOS/Photos/2006.07.01/

But sometimes I've forgotten to unclick the "Copy file to the Photos folder" box in the photos import dialog and end up with photos under ~/Photos/. Recently I checked and found there were almost a gigabytes worth of photos under there.

So this is what I did to move them to under /PHOTOS/Photos/ and keep all the tags and metadata correct.

  • Back up /home and /PHOTOS to an external USB. I love rsnapshot.
    $ rsnapshot daily

  • make an extra backup of the f-spot database
    $ cp ~/.gnome2/f-spot/photos.db photos-backup.db

  • Start poking around the f-spot database and updating it.
    $ sqlite3 ~/.gnome2/f-spot/photos.db
    sqlite> .schema photos
    CREATE TABLE photos ( id INTEGER PRIMARY KEY NOT NULL,
    time INTEGER NOT NULL,
    directory_path STRING NOT NULL,
    name STRING NOT NULL,
    description TEXT NOT NULL,
    default_version_id INTEGER NOT NULL
    );

  • See how many photos are in ~/Photos...
    sqlite> select count(*) from photos where directory_path like '/home/marc/Photos/%';
    260

  • Take a look at a few of them to see the path names...
    sqlite> select directory_path from photos where directory_path like '/home/marc/Photos/%' limit 0,10;

  • Update the pathname to my prefered one. I've added an 'a' to the end just so I won't overwrite an existing directory.
    sqlite> update photos set directory_path = "/PHOTOS/Photos/2006.06.22a" where directory_path = "/home/marc/Photos/2006/6/22";
    sqlite> .quit

  • Make the directory and move the files to the new location...
    mkdir /PHOTOS/Photos/2006.06.22a
    mv -v /home/marc/Photos/2006/6/22/HPIM117* /PHOTOS/Photos/2006.06.22a

  • Repeat for each directory. I did it all within emacs' shell so cut-n-paste made it a snap.

More on Dual Monitor with Ubuntu/Dapper

This is a follow on to last week's post about Dual Monitor on Ubuntu/Dapper

I've been using the xorg.conf-ati.20060621 configuration at work with two monitors, but when at home the laptop didn't degrade down to working with the one LCD monitor of the laptop. So, here is a new configuration that lets you switch between a single monitor mode (1024x768) or one large one (2048x768) that can be 'slid over to' by using the mouse. The key press is Control-Alt-+ (the + over on the side where the number entry is). On the laptop, it is Control-Alt-blue_Fn-?

Here the is xorg.conf file:

Dual Monitor on Ubuntu/Dapper

I've noticed a number of people asking about dual head support in dapper on #ubuntu, so here is my setup:

This hp/compaq nc6000 laptop/notebook that has an ATI card:

$ sudo lspci|grep VGA
0000:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV350 [Mobility Radeon 9600 M10]

I have two head monitors working with both the 'ati' and the closed source 'fglrx' drivers.

Here are the configuration files:

  • xorg.conf-fglrx.20060621 -- works when booting without the second monitor

  • xorg.conf-ati.20060621 -- when booting with out the second monitor attached, it still thinks it is there. Some windows may pop up on the unreachable monitor.

  • Before you start hacking around with your xorg.conf, save a copy somewhere safe.

    Creative Webcam Live! works with Ubuntu/Dapper

    I just picked up a Creative Webcam Live! which does a reasonable 1024x768 snapshot and 640x480 video resolution for $49. At first it looked like I'd have to build the spca5xx kernel module for Ubuntu/Dapper, but it is now included in the default kernel & modules packages.

    Just plug it in and start using one of the many video capture packages like camorama, webcam, camstream, motion, gqcam, etc and start playing around!

    Getting ajaxMyTop to work on Ubuntu/Dapper

    I'm sitting in MySQL bootcamp today and wanted to have some ajaxMyTop eyecandy running on my laptop while doing the labs.

    Unfortunately ajaxMyTop is written to PHP5 and I'm using PHP4 on Ubuntu/Dapper. These are the steps needed to get it working:

    * Install php4-domxml (apt-get install php4-domxml)

    * Restart apache2 ( sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart )

    * Grab the modified processlist.php from the ajaxMyTop forum on sourceforge here and replace the one provided by the 0.5.5 kit.

    * Create a dbconfig.inc.php that looks something like this:

    <?
    $dbHost = "localhost";
    $dbUser = "root";
    $dbPass = "YOUR-ROOT-PASSWORD";
    $db = mysql_connect($dbHost, $dbUser, $dbPass);

    Riya beta is here!

    I got an invitation for the riya beta, but I have to say "riyasux"

    Check out this gotcha from their email:
    The Riya uploader is PC only right now. Darn it, we know. If you are on a Mac and you can find a friend with a PC, you can upload there, then train, tag and search your photos on your Mac. We promise that we are working on that Mac uploader. Please keep sending those stats. ;)

    By "PC" they mean Windows-only, so Linux (and Mac) users are out of luck.

    Come on riya, don't you know all the cool kids (pronounced early adopters) use GNU/Linux and Mac these days?

    Last night at the GNHLUG meeting, Christopher Aillon of Red Hat told me the magic command to fix it:
    $ sudo gtk-update-icon-cache -f /usr/share/icons/hicolor

    The lack of some icon cache was preventing a network configuration tool from running. Ugh.

    This allowed the applet to start, but wasn't controlling the network devices. For that, I needed to remove references to any network devices so the only thing in my /etc/network/interfaces are these lines:

    Updated to Wordpress 2.0

    As with previous Wordpress upgrades this one was also painless.  My 'Yet Another Daily Delicious' and 'Yet Another Weekly Delicious' continue to work also.
    I've not yet restored the style sheet header (this one) or added back some of the other doodads.
